The objectives, as its name plainly states, is to cut into the body of work we call the "contemporary" in movement, dance and performance. Specifically the Festival, which will be a meeting of choreographers, performers and scholars, will focus on exploring and interrogating the "asianess" of the contemporary. Undeniably, there is certain kind of "asianess" in the works of all the artists participating in Grey Fest — 2010 that makes them uniquely contemporary. It represents a post-colonial sensibility that has been forged after the demise of trans-Atlantic hegemony of Europe and the United States; when a new dialectic emerged. This is not a new triumphalism it is an exploration of a new possibility of seeing dance, performance and movement from a perspective of Asian contingencies and histories. A contingency and a history that has assimilated, and to some extent already contains, the "West".
Each of five invited artists invited to take will be involved in the Festival in a variety ways. They will perform, demonstrate, collaborate, share, take part in exchanges, conduct studios and be part of discussions with scholars and critics. What is more all of these presentations will be open not only to the general public but specially to the performing arts students of the La Salle College of the Arts, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the School of the Arts (SOTA). In all, GRAEY FESTIVAL 2010: VIVISECTION will be an in-depth, broad, through and completely accessible exploration of the contemporary in movement, dance and performance; the likes of which has never before been in Singapore.
